Michael Bland Bolsters Kiddie Pop

Last week I'm sitting on the sofa reading a Nelson DeMille novel, my youngest child watching Disney channel, and I look up to see who's screechy voice is ruining an otherwise palatable rock/pop background. Not Miley, not enough nasal tone. Okay, it's one of those Jonas brothers. Doubletake! Did I just see what I thought I'd seen? Michael Bland behind the kit, sporting a mohawk, lending some credibility by association to manufactured Disney kiddie rocker Nick Jonas. Jonas producer/bass player John Fields recruited a trio of former Prince's New Power Generation members to help back-up Nick Jonas on his recent cd. Surpisingly, this is not Bland's first foray into the mouse's house. He appeared on the last Jonas brothers cd as well.

Westerberg fans will recall that Bland played drums for past PW solo tours and most recently on the 2004/2005 Folker tour. His other Mats connection, he currently is playing with Tommy Stinson for Minneapolis alums Soul Asylum. Kudos to ERB, the original "Ebony Rhythm Buddha", on scoring a nice paycheck and broadening the kids musical experience. Now if I can figure out how to turn the volume to zero on the vocals, I might actually listen again.

Westerberg at First Ave.

First Ave. hosted "the Craft" featuring Paul Westerberg. The Craft is a concert series sponsored by MGD, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and locally by Minneapolis radio station Cities 97. Featured artists perform and talk about their music in a "Story Tellers" type format. Other featured artists are Elvis Costello, Frank Black, and Aimee Mann. Westerberg appeared at First Ave. on Sunday, September 23.

For the lucky who were given tickets, the interview and performance went off without a hitch. In uncustomary fashion, Paul was cooperative and forthcoming with his answers to questions posed by Warren Zanes (Del Fuegos fame). Despite a hand injury suffered earlier in the year, he played almost flawlessly. Alas, with two perfectly working hands Paul never played flawlessly. But that is part of the charm isn't it? Mats Reunite for One Night...

Well, kinda, maybe, it's not really the Replacements unless Chris was there. But it was as close to a live Mats reunion as we will likely get. Let's just call it the Paul & Tommy show and pray to the gods of music that they decide to take it on the road in the near future.
